Yugioh trap question?

So my opponent used stamping destruction to destroy one spell or trap and inflict 500 points of damage, and selected my only trap, secret barrel. I then used the trap, and since it had a higher spell speed, it would resolve itself first, right ? And so it would be gone from the field and stamping destruction would not have a target, and so couldn't inflict the damage. Is this correct ?
